Rental Information

Please read the following terms carefully before placing your booking. By completing a reservation with EVX.life, you acknowledge and agree to the conditions outlined below.

1. Eligibility

To rent a vehicle from EVX.life, the primary renter must hold a valid, full driver's licence and be at least 21 years of age. International renters must present a valid overseas licence along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) if the licence is not issued in English.

EVX.life reserves the right to refuse any booking where the renter does not meet these requirements at the time of pick-up.

2. Bookings & Payment

All bookings are made through the EVX.life website and are subject to availability. Full payment is required at the time of booking unless otherwise arranged. Prices displayed are in New Zealand Dollars (NZD) and include GST where applicable.

By completing a booking, you agree to the rental period, pricing, and any selected add-ons as shown at checkout.

3. Security Deposit

A security deposit is required for all rentals. The deposit amount ranges from $300 to $3,500 NZD depending on the product you are renting. The exact deposit amount for your selected item will be displayed at checkout.

The deposit is placed as a hold on your payment method at the time of booking and is fully refundable upon the satisfactory return of the rental item in its original condition, subject to the terms outlined in this agreement.

For vehicle rentals, the security deposit serves as your maximum liability in the event of damage, accident, or theft. EVX.life may deduct up to the full deposit amount to cover the cost of repairs or replacement. You will not be charged beyond the deposit amount, provided the terms and conditions of this agreement have been met.

Please note that EVX.life does not offer in-house excess reduction cover. We strongly recommend arranging your own travel insurance prior to your rental period. Many travel insurance policies include rental car excess cover, which can reimburse you for any deposit amount retained in the event of a claim. Some credit cards also include rental vehicle cover — we recommend checking with your card provider before your rental begins.

4. Pick-Up & Return

All rentals are based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Pick-up and return options are as follows:

Scarborough home office — Free of charge.

Christchurch city (working hours 10 am – 3 pm) — $29 per trip.

Christchurch city (after hours 3 pm – 6 pm) — $69 per trip.

Christchurch Airport (standard hours 9 am – 5 pm) — Fee calculated at checkout.

Christchurch Airport (after hours 5 pm – 9 pm) — $89 per trip.

Renters must return all items by the agreed date and time. Late returns may incur additional daily charges at the applicable rental rate. If you need to extend your booking, please contact us as early as possible — extensions are subject to availability.

5. Vehicle Condition & Charging

Vehicles are provided in clean condition with the battery charged to approximately 90–95%. The renter is expected to return the vehicle in a similar state of cleanliness and charge.

Upon return, the vehicle must have a minimum battery level of 65%, or the same level as at handover (whichever is higher). If the vehicle is returned below 65% or significantly lower than the handover level, a recharge service fee may apply.

A $99 cleaning fee applies if the vehicle interior is returned in an excessively dirty condition.

6. Kilometre Allowance

Each vehicle rental includes 350 km per day. Any kilometres driven beyond the daily allowance will be charged at $0.50 per additional kilometre.

An Unlimited KMs add-on is available at checkout for $70/day for renters who anticipate higher usage. If purchased, the per-kilometre rate does not apply and your rental includes unlimited kilometres at no extra charge.

Bookings of 4 days or more are eligible for 20% off both the vehicle rental and the Unlimited KMs add-on. This discount is applied automatically at checkout.

7. Use of Rental Items

All rental items must be used in a responsible and lawful manner. The renter agrees to the following conditions:

Vehicles must not be driven on unsealed roads, beaches, riverbeds, or other off-road surfaces unless expressly permitted by EVX.life. If the vehicle is found to have been used in breach of these restrictions, the security deposit may be forfeited in part or in full, regardless of whether visible damage has occurred, as prohibited use can cause underlying mechanical or structural damage that may not be immediately apparent.

The Tesla Model Y RWD (2022) is not permitted on ski field access roads or in alpine snow conditions.

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited in all vehicles. A $350 cleaning and decontamination fee will be charged if evidence of smoking or vaping is found upon return.

The transport of pets is not permitted in any vehicle unless prior written consent has been obtained from EVX.life.

The renter is responsible for all traffic infringements, tolls, and fines incurred during the rental period.

8. Snow Chains & Winter Travel

EVX.life strongly recommends that all renters travelling in the South Island during peak winter months (June to September) carry snow chains. While the Tesla Model Y RWD is not permitted on ski field access roads or in alpine snow conditions, certain sealed South Island roads still require all vehicles to carry chains by law.

Legal requirements and key roads to be aware of:

Milford Sound Highway (State Highway 94) — It is a legal requirement for all vehicles travelling between Te Anau and Milford Sound to carry snow chains from June through November, regardless of forecast conditions. Authorities conduct regular checks, and fines apply if chains are not carried.

Arthur's Pass & Lindis Pass — These alpine roads are subject to mandatory chain requirements when snow or ice is present. Failure to carry chains during adverse conditions may result in fines or renters being turned away by authorities.

Crown Range Road — Chains are strongly recommended on this high alpine route, particularly during winter conditions.

South Island alpine roads can experience rapid and unpredictable weather changes. Renters are required to check the NZTA (Waka Kotahi) Road Planner for current conditions, delays, or "Chains Required" notices before departure.

For the Tesla Model Y (rear-wheel drive), chains must be fitted to the rear (drive) wheels only.

Please contact EVX.life to confirm snow chain availability before your trip.

9. Damage & Liability

The renter is responsible for any damage to, loss of, or theft of the rental vehicle during the rental period, including damage caused by third parties. Any damage must be reported to EVX.life immediately.

A security deposit is required at the time of booking and will be held for the duration of the rental period. Your maximum liability is capped at the security deposit amount. If the cost of repair or replacement is less than the deposit, the remaining balance will be refunded. You will not be charged beyond the deposit amount, provided the terms and conditions of this agreement have been met.

EVX.life is not liable for any personal injury, loss of belongings, or indirect damages arising from the use of our rental vehicles. Please note that New Zealand's ACC scheme covers medical costs for injuries occurring within New Zealand regardless of fault.

10. Cancellations & Refunds

Cancellations made more than 48 hours before the scheduled pick-up time are eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made within 48 hours of pick-up may be subject to a cancellation fee.

No-shows or failure to collect the rental item at the agreed time without prior notice will result in forfeiture of the full rental payment.

EVX.life reserves the right to cancel a booking at any time due to unforeseen circumstances, in which case a full refund will be issued.

11. EV Charging on the Road

New Zealand has an extensive public EV charging network. Charging costs incurred at public stations during your rental period are the renter's responsibility unless otherwise stated.

For Tesla vehicles, Supercharger usage is billed separately after your rental. Payment can be made via Tap to Pay (a 2.5% transaction fee applies) or by bank transfer (available to New Zealand-based renters only). EVX.life will provide detailed charging invoices for full transparency.

We will walk you through charging options and any required apps at handover to ensure you are confident before departure.

12. Starlink & Accessory Rentals

Starlink Mini rentals, e-bikes, power stations, projectors, car seats, bike racks, and other accessories are subject to the same general terms regarding security deposits, condition on return, and liability.

Starlink data plans must be selected at the time of booking. Data usage beyond your selected plan may incur additional charges. Rental items must be returned with all original components, cables, and accessories.

13. Privacy & Personal Information

Personal information collected during the booking process is used solely for the purpose of managing your rental and will be handled in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. EVX.life will not share your personal information with third parties except where required by law or necessary to process your booking.

14. Amendments to These Terms

EVX.life reserves the right to update or modify these rental terms at any time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date. It is the renter's responsibility to review the current terms prior to each booking.
